French research "Organic residues observatory" - Objectives

Issues of organic residues recycling
The objectives of the French research "OR observatory" (i.e. SOERE PRO) were to set a network of long-term field experiments in different pedoclimatic conditions where (1) the evolution of soil, crop, water and air qualities would be measured following repeated application of OR, (2) and the dynamic of these evolutions explained considering the characteristics of the OR (origin X treatment) and taking into account the climatic conditions and the pedoclimatic conditions.

One of the main drivers of Organic residues recycling impacts is related with their impact on soil organic matter (OM) dynamics.

So the objectives can be detailed as follow:

  • To determine and simulate how OR recycling modify organic matter (OM) dynamic in soils,  biogeochemical cycles related with OM and other biogeochemical cycles of major nutrients (P, K…)
  • To quantify the environmental impacts related to gas emission (NH3, greenhouse gas (GHG), volatile organic compounds (VOC)) making possible the assessment of emission factors to contribute to larger databases through aggregation with results from other ecosystems
  • To parameterize models simulating the biogeochemical cycles in agrosystems receiving OR
  • To study the effects of repeated applications of OR on physical, chemical and biological soils properties and functioning
  • Identify and rank the parameters that condition contaminant behaviour in the agrosystems and their evolution with repeated OR applications,
  • Determine ecotoxicological risks related to these repeated applications
