Gampela - Burkina Faso

Gampela
Gampela is one of the historical sites associated to SOERE PRO manage in a tropical context

Gampela has been initiated in 2007

The objectives of Gampela device is to evaluate the effect of repeated inputs of different urban OWPs on sorghum crops and soil properties, by making two modes of OWP inputs.

Treatments

This site is an experimental device composed of 3 blocks in divided parcels (9 m²) on which are studied the effects of repeated inputs of 6 urban composts with variable compositions, according to their mode of application (located at the plant level (or zaï technique) or on the entire plot).

The 14 treatments are:

  • Mixed composted waste : slaughterhouse (60 %) and green waste (40 %) (C1) - localized / spread
  • Mixed composted waste : slaughterhouse (40 %), cooked (20 %) and green waste (40 %) (C2) - localized / spread
  • Mixed composted waste : slaughterhouse (30 %), cooked (30 %) and green waste (40 %) (C3) - localized / spread
  • Mixed composted waste : slaughterhouse (20 %), cooked (40 %) and green waste (40 %) (C4) - localized / spread
  • Mixed composted waste : cooked (60 %) and green waste (40 %) (C5) - localized / spread
  • Composted green waste (100 %) (C6) - localized / spread
  • Control: non compost (T)

Site management

The site is cultivated in sorghum monoculture. Compost inputs are manually done with 3 t.ha-1 of dry matter per year, slightly buried or covered with soil at the beginning of the rainy season. Tillage is done manually, with annual sowing in July and manual control of weeds

  • Apparent density : 1.5 g.cm-3
  • Organic carbon content : 3 g.kg-1
  • Total phosphorus content : 0,2 g.kg-1 ; Olsen phosphorus content < 0,01 g.kg-1
  • Water pH : 5.3
  • Climate type : Sudano-Sahelian with 2 contracted seasons
  • Average annual temperature: 28.2 ° C
  • Average annual rainfall: 789 mm
