Optimal periodic command of multi specific bioreactors in order to optimize their performances - Ongoing PhD

Research activities

We consider the chemostat model with periodic dilution rate which is the control variable. We focus on conditions for which bringing the substrate quantity periodically improve the yield (wastewater treatment, production of biogaz) comparing with the same model, with a constant rate.

The work is mainly organised in two steps:

  • First, we analyse the model and determine whether it is possible that the optimal constant control can be improved by cycling.
  • When it is possible, we construct a periodic control that is optimal, using the maximum principle of Pontryagin.

We will study also the delayed chemostat model with periodic operation and extremum seeking control over periodic orbits, when the growth rate function is imperfectly known.
