"Analyse et contrôle optimal d'un bioréacteur de digestion anaérobie" PhD defensed on the 14/12/2015 in Montpellier

Research activities

The work proposed in this PhD  thesis focusses on the rigorous mathematical formalization of optimal control laws. Being familiar with anaerobic digestion, several experts have proposed “practical optimization rules” without being able to formally establish with respect to which criteria such laws are optimal.

Applying this control law on real pilots pointed out their robustnesswith respect to input system disturbances and their ability to improve systems functioning.

The AM2 model is a 2-steps model of anaerobic digestion where the COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) is transformed by a microbial consortium X1 into VFA (Volatile Fatty Acids) and then into biogas by a second consortium X2 slower than X1. Moreover, X2 is inhibited by an accumulation of VFA. An overload will then have the effect of reducing the flow of biogas.

In this work, we will use the AM2 model to formalize such control laws from a mathematical point of view in order, finally, to rigorously deduce their robustness and stability properties.
