Atelier 3: Adapting Farming systems to Climate Change
Some geographic areas are already heavily impacted by climate change and livestock systems in these areas have had to evolve, while other regions will be impacted soon. There are many lessons to be learned from current experiences that can give us valuable indices on how to anticipate ongoing changes.

The objective of this workshop is to question the adaptation from the farming system and the breeder perspective, starting from previously tested scenarios. What leeway is there for the proposal and adoption of innovations, both from technical and human points of view? How do we help genetic solutions (flock genetic improvement, increase of genetic diversity…) be adopted?

1-Introduction of two examples of adaptation of farming systems to climate change

  • What changes in common practices can be applied to reduce the CC impact?
  • What contribution from genetics?

2- How does the farmer perceive the upheaval of climate change? How to make him aware of the impact of CC on the breeding system??

  • Needs and tools to make CC effects more tangible
  • How to integrate the knowledge on the impact of climate change to develop farming system less vulnerable to CC?

3- How can research support the breeder to adjust to climate change?

  • May livestock keepers accept strong changes in their practice, like multispecies or multibreeds management, or a radical change in the raised breeds or species?
  • What major categories of solutions can be tested with him?
