Distribution patterns and sampling

Distribution patterns and sampling

The horizontal (very small scale distribution, small scale distribution, medium scale distribution, large scale distribution and macro distribution) and vertical distribution patterns of nematode species are discussed in this chapter.

Approaches to, and guidelines in, sampling for the evaluation of nematode density and distribution are presented. Other sampling approaches for population density estimation (mapping fields using core samples, repeated collection of bulk samples from a field, and sampling pattern/sampling grid) are mentioned. A scheme for the development of sampling methods for potato cyst nematode (Globodera rostochiensis and G. pallida) detection in the Netherlands, and factors involved in macro distribution are briefly discussed.
