Other effects

The spreading of Organic Waste Products (OWP) improves other chemical properties in the soil such as pH and CEC.

Effects of OWP on pH

The pH of the soil was initially slightly acidic (6.9). The farmer regularly carried out liming to maintain the pH close to neutral.

Liming was discontinued after the field test was put in place. Without organic matter (control treatment), the soil tends to remain acidic or become even more acidic. Spreading OWPs had a positive effect by increasing the pH of the soil and keeping it at values close to neutral. MSW and BIO composts are particularly effective. The pH measured for these plots in 2011 was 7.5 and 7.8 respectively (Figure 1).

Effects of ROPs on the Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC)

The CEC of recipient soils varies between 8 and 10 cmol+/kg soil. However, a decline in the CEC can be seen in the control plots, which do not receive any ROPs. The plots receiving compost have a CEC that is stable or up slightly (BIO compost) (Figure 2). The effect of ROPs is directly linked to the increase in organic matter in the soil. Meanwhile, in the control plots, the decline is due to the mineralisation of organic matter in the soil which, in the absence of further supplies, is not restored.
