Network description

More than 2600 forest trials have been installed since 1964 by the French Institute of Technology for Forest-based and Furniture Sectors (FCBA). The trials are varied, ranging from a simple production monitoring plot installed in a "standard" stand to the most complex experimentation allowing a rigorous statistical interpretation of the results.


Today, about 1000 trials are still being monitored. They mainly concern five main Genus (Pinus, Pseudotsuga, Picea, Populus, Eucalyptus) to which are added a few species of the taxodiaceae family (Sequoia sempervirens, Sequoiadendron giganteum), as well as about twenty other leafy and coniferous species.


The main areas of current trials are genetic improvement (>50%), followed by reforestation techniques and silviculture (about 20% each). Some areas that were widely studied in the past, such as fertilisation or nursery monitoring (types of plants and containers), are now rather poorly represented.

Services offer

FCBA has recently set up the BAOGREFF website http://base-sylviculture-genetique.fcba.fr/?lang=en which allows users to search in the database by the entry "experimental device" or by the entry "genetic unit" used. A multi-criteria search and a cartographic visualization are also available. The site is accessible to all for descriptive data (metadata) and a differentiated rights management system allows the FCBA's Biotechnologies and Advanced Forestry cluster (BSA) to access more detailed information from installation reports to individual "tree" data.

Team

The network is managed by BSA unit, mainly based in Pierroton (33), but which also has relays in the Institute's territorial delegations (Limoges, Grenoble, Dijon). The BSA unit also benefits from the support of a statistician (Champs-sur-Marne) who manages the associated database and carries out most of the statistical processing related to the data.


Work description and access modalities

FCBA's extensive network of forestry testing facilities forms the foundation of the BSA unit's activity. Every year, new devices are installed (about fifteen per year) and about a hundred or so are measured. It is our "laboratory" that has the advantage of covering the entire French territory and of having a series of often long time series of measurements at its disposal. The disadvantage of this geographical dispersion is that it requires interactions with a multitude of actors.


This network provides many research projects with high-quality data. It is available to researchers and foresters from different disciplines to answer their questions on possible changes in cultivated forests, whether they are undergone or, on the contrary, chosen.  It is made available within the framework of a formal agreement (consortium agreement for a research project or specific agreement for a one-off study).
