Plateform description

The SILVATECH platform is a national platform dedicated to the analysis of forest ecosystems and wood. The range of techniques and methods developed allows integrated approaches from the molecular scales to the plot, a capacity to analyse structures, properties and functions, from the tree in its ecosystem to the wood material.

SILVATECH is supported by the UMR SILVA (1434) as well as the UMR BEF (1138), the UMR IAM (1136) and the USC LERMAB (EA 4370) under the supervision of INRAE, the University of Lorraine and AgroParisTech. In addition to the IN-SYLVA France infrastructure, it is part of the LABEX ARBRE and CEBA.

SILVATECH provides analytical expertise and development capacity to regional, national and international research units through enhanced support to integrative research programmes (ecology, ecophysiology, biogeochemistry, functioning of forest-prairie-aquatic ecosystems, dendrometry, wood anatomy and properties, structure-properties relationships, wood sciences). It plays an increased role in national and international networks, regional and European training actions, and is attractive to international researchers.

From a functional point of view, SILVATECH is organised into 3 interconnected technical clusters:

  • Isotopy-Biochemistry cluster: spectrometry coupling, chromatography, isotopy, plasma dedicated to the analysis of molecules with complex matrices (wood, sap, soil-water), sample preparation platform (grinding, extractions, microweighing).
  • Imaging-Microscopy cluster: high-resolution electron and confocal imaging, cryo-electron microscopy, mineral X-ray microanalyses, histology and photonic microscopy, sample preparation platform (microtomy and cryo-microtomy, freeze-drying, metallization, grinding)
  • X-Ray Imaging cluster: physical and mechanical properties, laser techniques, radiography, tomography and X-ray diffraction, allowing a fine and multi-scale study of the internal and external structure of the objects under study, preparation rooms (wood and metal).

SILVATECH has developed a network of collaborations with numerous public or private research entities (CIRAD, CNRS, IRD, ONF, IFN, FCBA, universities, CEA, companies...) and aims to open its services to a large scientific community within the framework of its core competencies and domains.

The platform also offers chemical analysis services in solution (major elements, traces or ultra-traces) and confocal and correlative imaging.


Finally, SILVATECH provides applicants with all the techniques necessary for the preparation of samples on the INRAE site located in Champenoux (FR 54280). They are available by appointment with the technical referents or on the platform's website. In line with our quality management system, we have set up regular monitoring of our equipment through calibrations and scheduled checks.

The laboratory is managed by a full-time assistant engineer (also a specialist in isotope analysis) and 5 permanent technicians with different specialties (on average 70% of the full time dedicated to the laboratory - maintenance of installations and measurements). In parallel, the research unit offers scientific knowledge in biogeochemistry in forest ecosystems, mainly on C, N and cation cycles. We regularly welcome international students and researchers.

Work description and access modalities

  • Assisting in the technical dimensioning of research projects to ensure better execution of research projects

Research and development projects involving SILVATECH will have to be discussed prior to the submission of the project with the technical and administrative referents concerned in the infrastructure in order to size the technical organisation of the project (staff time, schedules, protocols, processing, costs). A copy of the submitted project will be sent to SILVATECH via the address silvatech@inrae.fr. Projects following this procedure will be systematically prioritised. SILVATECH reserves the right to refuse projects built independently of these recommendations.


  • Ensure traceability of applications on an annual or multi-year basis

In addition to the e-mail or telephone exchanges with the platform's agents, each project leader will have to fill in a written request for work to specify the scientific, technical and organisational points necessary for his or her support. The document is available on the platform's website, and can be filled in and communicated during the annual call for projects or as needed.

At the request of the project leader, an application may be postponed to the following year. No preparation or analysis/measurement activities may begin without a prior request for work. SILVATECH will provide in return a financial estimate and a unique project code.

This number should be kept and reminded to the platform interlocutors during subsequent exchanges. It will enable the phases of preparation, analysis and storage of samples and results to be traced. It will also be useful to pass it on to the officers responsible for preparing the samples.   • Ensuring seamless access to analytical services

Projects submitted by applicants to SILVATECH will be systematically analysed before validation. The persons in charge of the platform (N. Angeli and J. Ruelle) will assess the adequacy of the project with the fields of expertise and themes of the platform. If necessary, they will rely on SILVATECH's Council of Scientific Experts for strategic, ethical or legal issues. The managers of the 3 clusters will evaluate the technical feasibility of the projects (capacity to prepare/measure/observe the required indicators, mastery of the matrices, dangerousness of the samples), the development needs, the duration and the necessary costs. They will study the compatibility of the requests with current schedules and commitments, and will possibly make recommendations to the applicants to allow access (sampling, preparation, conservation, volumetrics, deadlines, etc.). Finally, in the event that questions of confidentiality or contractualisation of the partnership are raised, the platform will rely on the Partnership, Transfer and Innovation engineers of the Centre Grand-Est Nancy and the ECODIV department.


Applicants will be notified of the acceptance of the project within two weeks via the e-mail address silvatech@inrae.fr by the agents in charge of coordinating the project for SILVATECH. In return, the applicants undertake to respect all the elements contained in this document. In the event of refusal, the platform will propose, as far as possible, alternative solutions to the applicants from other infrastructures that are better able to meet the request.

Access unit and cost

  • Guarantee the financial traceability of each project and provide budget visibility to the infrastructure in order to forecast its expenses/investments.

For projects involving SILVATECH as a partner, the credits will be positioned at the request of the project leader as soon as the annual budget is opened. For multi-annual projects, the exercise will be repeated at the beginning of each year.

For projects where SILVATECH acts as a service provider, the rates proposed in the estimates will be applied according to the origin of the credits, and not according to the unitary affiliation of the researchers. This is justified by the 10% management fee applied by INRAE on external revenues (CNRS, CIRAD, universities...).

The minimum billable amount is 150 € HT, but it is possible to group several services together to reach this amount.

Only the prior receipt of a PDF order form (or failing that, a signed quote with the mention "good for agreement") or the positioning of credits on the platform's budget line will trigger the analyses/measures. Invoicing will be carried out when the results are sent to the project leader, via the INRAE management software.


  • Ensuring a transparent pricing policy that respects the rules of free competition

The full costs calculated include the direct costs (consumables, products, reagents, special fluids, standards, traceability/safety, packaging and storage) and indirect costs (equipment maintenance and depreciation, breakdown management, overheads and fluids, data management, head office costs) of the infrastructure as well as staff time.

On the basis of its full costs, SILVATECH defines a 4-level duty-free pricing policy on access units per analysis or access day:

  1. Tariff for private or international partners (full cost model)
  2. French public research organisation tariff (- discount on permanent personal salary)
  3. INRAE tariff (- discount for internal management fees)
  4. Internal tariff (UMR SILVA, BEF, IAM, LERMAB) (- discount for unit environmental costs)

The tariffs proposed here guarantee the perennial and stable operation of SILVATECH and will be readjusted according to the evolution of the expenditure items used to calculate these costs.

No specific discount will be applied by the platform in the case of co-publication or individual involvement in projects. In the case of specific work requiring further development or involvement of the applicants (training on analysis/measurement/observation equipment), SILVATECH reserves the possibility to offer a flat rate to the applicant.

INRAE is subject to the value added tax and applies it according to the rules in force.
