The ANTIOPES network

Background

Working groups from French National Alliance for Environmental Research and French National Alliance for Health and Life Sciences recently published a report entitled “French Initiative for Environmental-Health Research”

(IFRES; http://www.allenvi.fr/actualites/2013/rapport-ifresadresse)

This report has highlighted the needs for knowledge and has purposed a research strategy and an action plan to answer scientific and social challenges in the field of Environmental Health that covers disciplines of toxicology and ecotoxicology and aims to implement relevance of risk assessment for human being and ecosystems.

Actually, the ANTIOPES network (Integrated Ecotoxicological and Toxicological Analysis for Environmental Health Perspectives) has been identified by IFRES as a priority to implement its strategy.

Objectives

The aim of ANTIOPES is to coordinate efforts in the frame of IFRES to sustain researchers and institutes to meet main challenges in toxicology and ecotoxicology in France, and wishes to be a national and european reference. The objectives are the same in toxicology and ecotoxicology with, of course, specific variations in regard of considered field.

  • Understanding of long-term effects, including trans-generational effects (epigenetism) and their consequences on vulnerability and adaptive capability of individuals, populations and communities.
  • Understanding of the role of susceptibilities related to development stage, genetic profile or to co-exposures in effect related to pollutants.
  • Effect prediction, with systemic biology enhancement thanks to mass data availability in biology, identification and validation of biomarkers and modelling.
  • Chemical mixture effects on individual, population and community and functions of the ecosystem that they perform.

Organisation

ANTIOPES network is a cooperative partnership involving French Universities adn research Institutes for which Environmental Health field is at the heart of their concerns. It is organized with a steering committee and two Chairmen. In December 17, 2014, the ANTIOPES Steering Committee nominated Jeanne GARRIC (IRSTEA) Chairwoman and Robert BAROUKI (INSERM – Université Paris V) Chairman.

The French-speaking Network for Microbial Ecotoxicology (EcotoxicoMic)

Set up in 2013 by Stéphane Pesce (ISTREA) and Fabrice Martin-Laurent (INRA), the EcotoxicoMic network evolved in April 2015 into the the Multidisciplinary Thematic Network on Microbial Ecotoxicology (RTP EcotoxicoMic).

The objectives of the RTP EcotoxicoMic are to:

  • identify and federate the scientific community involved in microbial ecotoxicology research concerning all environmental compartments (air, soil, freshwater, marine environments, etc.),
  • encourage the exchange of knowledge and know-how within this community, and facilitate the development of scientific and technical collaborations,
  • foster exchanges of information concerning microbial ecotoxicology (issue of calls for proposals, offers of attachments, PhD thesis topics, etc.),
  • contribute to better account being taken of the scientific and societal challenges associated with microbial ecotoxicology,
  • ensure the promotion of microbial ecotoxicology within the framework of university training, institutional foresight studies, calls for projects and sessions during national and international congresses,
  • contribute to the development of AFNOR, ISO and OECD standards that will enable the transfer of microbial ecotoxicology methodologies to analytical laboratories, consultancy firms, regional centres for innovation and technology transfer (CRITT), etc., for the purpose of assessing environmental risks.

The Medicines in the Environment Scientific Interest Group

This Scientific Interest Group is currently being set up.

The objectives of the GIS "Médicaments dans l'Environnement" are to:

  • federate scientific and technical skills relative to the emission of active substances from medicines and their metabolites into the environment, within an organisation responsible for their coordination that will encourage the acquisition of multidisciplinary skills in response to demands from society,
  • enhance the attractiveness of exchanges between the human and social sciences and the experimental sciences in order to increase the very small number of scientists from the former field who are involved in this Scientific Interest Group,
  • promote interdisciplinarity and the transfer of knowledge acquired to institutional actors, industry and academic research,
  • exploit the knowledge and know-how acquired by the Scientific Interest Group.

The "Toxinelle" Scientific Interest Group

This Scientific Interest Group is currently being set up.

The primary objective of the GIS "Toxinelle" is to compile expert reports and implement research in toxicovigilance.  INRA's Chrono-Environment Research Unit is one of its founder members, alongside Vetagro’Sup Lyon, ONCFS (SAGIR network) and CNITV.
