Context

Genetic selection of ruminants requires more time than monogastrics and is potentially more complex because of the diversity of environments in ruminant systems. There is a particular need to maintain the robustness of dairy cows in the face of fluctuations in environmental quality. Thus, the choice of indicators used for selection is of great importance, and it is essential to verify and validate the anticipated benefits of such strategies over the long term. The new possibilities of phenotyping can be used to target the specific traits that contribute in part to efficiency and have rarely been studied until now because they are very difficult to evaluate. A key example is the ability to quantify, in commercial populations, the mobilization of body reserves of dairy cows. This characteristic is strongly correlated with robustness and efficiency.
The "Major societal challenges" component of the 2015 ANR Action Plan is structured in 9 societal challenges that represent the majority of ANR's intervention budget. In this context, the Deffilait project was submitted to the ANR in 2015 under the Generic Call for Proposals for the 2015 Action Plan and was selected for funding. The Deffilait project responds to the "Food security and demographic challenge" and fits in line 1 "Biology and adaptation of animals, plants and micro-organisms". It meets the goal of "ensuring food security".
