Biorefinery

The biorefinery ontology (BIOREFINERY) is dedicated to the determination of the best match treatment-biomass allowing the achievement of best constitutant extraction yields with minimum environmental impact. IC2ACV is divided into three parts:

  • The tab Ontology (Ontology -> BIOREFINERY) gives an overview of data structuration in order to help with global understanding
  • The tab Documents (Documents-> Bioref-XXX) gives access to a database collecting the information then structured by the ontology. Original papers and associated annotated tables (biomass composition, enzymatic characterization and process description) are available through this tab.
  • The tab Query (Query-> Define Scope -> BIOREFINERY) allows to find best pretreatments-biomass matches by defining research criteria (biomass type and characteristics, pretreatment type, etc.).

 Data available on this ontology concern biomass composition and characterization (crystallinity, surface area, particle size, porosity, etc.), physico-chemical pretreatments, enzymatic hydrolysis, and experimental processes descriptions.

Data are structured around:

  • Symbolic concepts including studied objects and qualitative data: biomass type and state, chemical reagent, treatments, etc.
  • Quantity concepts including quantitative data: biomass quantity, buffer concentration, specific surface, etc.
  • Relation concepts describing relationships between studied objects, qualitative and quantitative data: physico-chemical pretreatment relation, enzymatic hydrolysis, extrusion relation, etc.

 A relation concept is characterized by its label and its arguments; it can have several inputs but only one output. All inputs and outputs are related either to symbolic or quantity concepts.

For instance, the Milling Solid qty output relation describes the milling process by collecting data on biomass type and quantity, milling type, duration, energy and rotation speed (inputs) and output solid constituent quantity (output).

As another example, the relation Milling Contituent Size will have the same inputs but will take for output the constituent size.

The entire set of relation concepts aims to model biorefinery pre-treatments.
