UMR BIPAR Biologie Moléculaire et Immunologie Parasitaire


The Unit

The Joint Research Unit for Molecular Biology and Parasitic Immunology (BIPAR JRU) was established in 1999.

 The activities of the JRU are divided between two major themes:

  • Zoonotic food-borne parasites (helminths or protists) (PARALIM team).
  • Arthropod vectors (mainly ticks) and vector-borne pathogens (bacteria, but also viruses and parasitic protists) (MiTick team).

 The current missions of BIPAR JRU for each of these themes are to contribute to the protection of animal and public health, in line with the "One Health" concept developed under the auspices of WHO, OIE and FAO. This objective integrates the development of effective cutting-edge methods of screening, diagnosis and surveillance, as well as the integrated control of infectious agents (especially zoonotic), emerging or not, present in domestic animals (particularly livestock) and / or in wildlife, through a better understanding of their transmission pathways and interactions.

Our research programs are also oriented towards more ecosystem-based approaches, which are always centered on exploring specific factors governing pathogen transmission and and interactions with hosts.


Thus, the two current teams, PARALIM and MiTick, share the same objectives of acquiring solid fundamental knowledge as a prerequisite for the development of appropriate monitoring, detection, diagnostic and control tools. The research activities of the PARALIM team are strongly supported by the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) and the OIE Collaborating Center (OIE CC, international mandate obtained in 2014), while the MiTick team develops an additional axis focused on participatory science.

The National Reference Laboratory (NRL) "Foodborne parasites", the “Trichinella” antenna of the Central Laboratory for Veterinary Services (LCSV) and the OIE Collaborating Center [1] "Food borne Zoonotic parasites" are integrated in the ANSES BIPAR unit for all matters regarding reference testing, scientific and technical support activities. Research and development activities related to reference activities are developed within the JRU BIPAR.

JRU BIPAR aims to study host-pathogen relationships, for both cognitive and finalized purposes (improvement of diagnosis and detection of infections, innovative control measures).

Two unifying themes have been selected:
- Foodborne parasitic zoonoses, mainly trichinellosis, toxoplasmosis, cryptosporidiosis and giardiosis
- arthropod-borne diseases, more particularly those involving ticks.

The majority of the pathogens studied in the JRU are common to humans, domestic animals and wildlife. Therefore, the biology and ecology of these zoonotic agents and the basis of their virulence are the core of the projects of the JRU BIPAR with the overall objective of contributing to the protection of public health in the right line of the concepts "One Health" and "Health Ecology" developed by WHO, OIE and FAO.
