The Agroecology Unit focuses on the evaluation and the design of agroecological cropping systems relying on services provided by biodiversity. The activities of the participants in Be-Creative mainly focus on the analysis and the modelling of the effects of cropping systems on the biophysical processes underlying weed dynamics, with the ultimate goal of designing agroeocological cropping systems that reconcile multiple objectives (e.g. maintain crop production, reduce pesticide inputs, reduce weed harmfulness, promote biodiversity etc).

The team specializes in (1) investigating biological interactions with experiments in controlled conditions and field trials, (2) developing simulation and decision aid tools, (3) developing and applying methodologies to use these tools for co-designing cropping systems. Some research is also directed at understanding the interactive effects of cropping systems and landscape features on pest biological control (weeds, insects). This is conducted through empirical assessments of trophic networks and resulting pest control in comparative landscape scale surveys and in experimental set-ups such as field scale and mesocosms experiments.

The team contributes two tools to the project: (1) the weed dynamics model FLORSYS (see below), which allows running virtual experiments of cropping systems to understand and evaluate their multiperformance, (2) the prototype of the decision-support system DECIFLORSYS for designing agroecological weed management strategies.

The total number of permanent staff of the UMR Agroecology is about 200 people, plus 55 PhD and post-doctoral students.
