Le modèle Septo3D simule de manière dynamique le développement du couvert végétal et de l’épidémie associée. Les objectifs sont de mieux comprendre les effets de la structure du couvert végétal sur les épidémies. Cela se traduit par des objectifs associés qui sont : (1) d’identifier et de hiérarchiser les traits de structure du couvert végétal qui influencent (et en particulier diminuent) les épidémies et (2) de proposer des idéotypes échappant aux maladies. Le pathosystème modèle est « blé – septoriose ». 

Le modèle est basé sur la description quantitative de deux effets de la structure du couvert sur les épidémies : la quantité de surface foliaire influence l’infection et la croissance des lésions et la densité de végétation ainsi que les distances entre tissus infectés et sains influencent la dispersion des spores.
