BILHYNA est un modèle de type « agrométéorologique » conçu initialement pour prévoir les besoins en eau des cultures (gestion des irrigations) et le suivi du bilan hydrique à l’échelle de la parcelle, à un pas de temps journalier (Tuzet et al., 1992). Les nombreuses utilisations du modèle sur plusieurs cultures et sous différentes conditions environnementales ainsi que l’introduction de nouvelles fonctionnalités, en particulier celles liées aux transferts de l’eau dans le sol et au rôle du couvert végétal dans la captation des eaux de pluies et dans les processus infiltration/ruissellement ainsi que celles relatives à la modélisation de la croissance de la plante (parties aérienne et souterraine) et à son développement en fonction des conditions environnementales lui ont permis de devenir un véritable modèle de suivi du bilan énergétique et hydrique d’une culture ou d’une rotation de cultures à l’échelle journalière et sur une série d’années.
