Flagship project 3: Biodiversity for the sustainable management of SES

Flagship project 3 : Biodiversity enhancement and management for sustainable social-ecological systems

Agroecosystems are heavily impacted parts of the SES and they are often responsible for negative impacts on biodiversity and the environment; however, they can also be vital parts of cultural landscapes and provide a wide range of ecosystem services in addition to food production. This observation suggests that profound changes in agricultural practices are required to make SES more sustainable.

A recognized source of innovation is to make better use of biodiversity and promote it within agroecoystems. Designing and implementing these innovative and sustainable practices will require to (i) further understand their effects at levels higher than where they are implemented, (ii) develop tools to assess their effects on biodiversity and ecosystem services, (iii) explore with stakeholders the design of new systems and the conditions of a large adoption.

The objective of this project is to address these issues in three closely interacting activities combining analytical experiments, observations and participatory schemes:

  • Understanding the role of biodiversity and heterogeneity in landscapes for the reduction of inputs in agroecosystems: understand and quantify the role of biodiversity at gene to landscape scales in mediating ecosystem services, and to mobilise this knowledge to improve the performance of agroecosystems.
  • Design and multi-criteria assessment of agroecosystems based on strategies of biodiversity and resource management: propose, evaluate and implement innovative management systems by mobilising the functions of biodiversity.
  • Transforming socio-economic systems to sustainable pathways. The individual and collective appropriation of solutions proposed above is frequently hindered by unwillingness to change in stakeholders concerned and public policy incentives that are too broad to be effective. What leeway is there for socio-technical systems to evolve, and what transitions need to be organized to encourage the development of landscape practices that make use of biodiversity? How to identify and quantify the criteria on which public incentives should be based? 

Four 18 months-postdoctoral positions were filled to advance this research:

> Explore with stakeholders new public policy tools: agroenvironmental measures in a high natural value area -  Pierre-Yves Hardy; Supervisors: Véronique Souchere (SADAPT) and Maia David (EcoPub)

> Determinants of the evolution of a cultivated species at landscape scale and consequences for ecosystem service - Rémi Perronne; Supervisors: I. Goldringer / J Enjalbert (GQE-Le Moulon), D. Makowski / A Gauffreteau (Agronomie) & C. Pope (BIOGER)
