Lakes studied

For the project, we will consider three eutrophic lakes experiencing cyanobacteria blooms, which have different configurations and are subject to various nutrient stoichiometry trends (see Table below).

  • The Lake Taihu, a large shallow lake (China): it is large, shallow, often vertically well-mixed by wind, and has a lot of sampling sites distributed over the entire lake. It is the ideal site to model the horizontal heterogeneity of the cyanobacteria biomass distribution and the nutrient exchanges betweenthe sediment and the water column.
  • The Villerest reservoir,  a long and deep reservoir (France): the river Loire entering the reservoir has a strong hydrodynamic impact on the ecology: high current speeds during high discharge periods, strong water level variations. An accurate model of the advective transport and the vertical stratification at the seasonal scale will be necessary to achieve a relevant modelling of the cyanobacteria dynamics.
  • The Lake Champs-sur-Marne, a small and shallow polymictic peri-urban lake (France): N2-fixing and non-fixing cyanobacteria species alternate during summer and early autumn. The main drivers of this competition are nutrient stoichiometry and the alternation of stratification and mixing episodes during which the nutrients are released from the sediments. This lake will be used to develop a model of the dynamics of phytoplankton community composition.
