AGADAPT - Adapting the water use by the agriculture sector

Site description

The area of this district is 500 ha and currently 307 ha are irrigated. The irrigation was modernized changing from surface irrigation to drip irrigation. An irrigation pond with storage capacity of 15000 m3 was built. This pond is fed by the irrigation channel Jucar-Turia, which is the main channel that transports water to the city of Valencia.

Irrigation district Picassent Sector XI

At the end of 2005 the modernization of the irrigated district Sector XI (municipality of Picassent (Valencia)) started. Works finished in August 2007.

The Sector XI is divided in two independent networks (“Camí de Torrent” and “Realon”) each one with its pumps and central fertilization system (Figure 1). Water is delivered to the plots by means of multiuser hydrants, where irrigation intakes are placed, and each one with its own water meter. These water intakes feed the drip subunits. An automation system controls the opening and shutting of each valve. The daily amount of irrigation can be read and stored.

Table 1 summarizes the characteristics of the two irrigation systems.
